Product description

Silvaroyal® is one of the most effective wood preservatives in the world. It has been proven to successfully protect wood even in the harshest, most extreme conditions. Silvaroyal® primary water-based wood preservative comes in two colour tones, Silvaroyal® and Silvaroyal® Brown. Both products protect wood against wood fungi as well as wood-boring insects, termites and marine pests and are therefore designed to protect all wood, regardless of its intended use*, such as roof structures, log cabins, garden furniture, pergolas, children's playground structures, balcony and other railings, wooden facade cladding, etc., as well as all wood elements in indoor living spaces.

The Silvaroyal® formulation allows the active ingredients to bind into the wood cell wall after just 48 hours and not be leached out later, so it can be used to permanently protect wood that will be exposed to the harshest conditions and weathering (rain, snow, constant contact with fresh or sea water**, etc.). Water is used as the friendliest solvent in the preparation and application of Silvaroyal®.

Silvaroyal® wood preservative is non-flammable and does not increase the combustibility of treated wood; on the contrary, due to the presence of inorganic compounds in the preservative, protected wood ignites even slightly harder and burns more slowly than unprotected wood.

Silvaroyal® wood preservative is suitable for all types of wood protection processes: coating, rinsing, spraying, dipping, as well as vacuum-pressure impregnation. In the case of the colour version Silvaroyal® Brown, we recommend applying it with a brush to achieve the correct colour tone (due to the even distribution of the pigment), bearing in mind that the final colour tone on the wood is only indicative, as the primary function of Silvaroyal® Brown is the primary protection of the wood against pests, not the decorative colouration effect of the wood!

The method and amount of preservative applied will depend on the location of exposure and the intended use of the wood product.

Coating or short-term dipping, using 1 kg of preservative per 4 to 5 m2 of wood surface, is recommended especially for the protection of wood that will not be exposed to precipitation (e.g., protection of roofs, eaves, etc.). However, for the protection of facade cladding, log cabins, balcony and garden railings, outdoor playing structures and garden furniture, we recommend at least a 24-hour dipping period to achieve higher levels of penetration, as the active ingredients of the preservative penetrate deeper into the wood. For wood that is to be used in constant contact with running (fresh or sea) water or in contact with soil, the vacuum-pressure impregnation process, which is also part of our range of services, should be used to ensure quality protection.

During the Silvaroyal® protection process, the wood turns pastel green. Protected wood exposed to the weather conditions and the sun (UV rays) will patinate (turn grey) over time, which is a completely natural process that does not affect the quality of the protection or the life span of the wood product/object.

If you want to additionally colour the protected wood or prevent the surface from patinating, we recommend using our water-based stain - Silvalazur, which, in addition to its colouring function, also offers additional protection against the weather conditions.

* different exposure situations (i.e. use classes of wood) require different levels of protection with Silvaroyal®; higher the use class, higher the demand for depth of penetration and preservative  retention. For additional information contact our experts at info@silvaprodukt.si.

** exposure in sea water (use class 5 according to European standard EN 335) is a specific type of exposure which demands for additional consultance with field experts. For additional information contact our experts at info@silvaprodukt.si.

Effectiveness of Silvaroyal® wood preservative

The choice of a preservative should be made in accordance with the requirements of EN 599-1:2009. It is highly recommended that the effectiveness of the preservative is also verified by independent institutions under actual conditions, i.e., by long-term field tests in the climatic conditions in which the preservative will actually be used. While laboratory tests give a basic indication of the potential effectiveness of a wood preservative against wood pests, full information can only be obtained from tests under actual conditions.

Silvaroyal® is one of the most frequently tested wood preservatives, as its effectiveness has been verified by independent institutions in tests in all classes of application and under all climatic conditions. Tests have been conducted in Slovenia and in many other European countries, as well as on other continents. Silvaroyal® preservative is proven effective and complies with the following standards:

  1. Wood impregnated with Silvaroyal® is fully protected against the action of wood-decay fungi in accordance with TS CEN/TS 15083-1:2006. Protected wood retains its resistance even after prior artificial ageing in accordance with EN 84:2002.
  2. Silvaroyal® impregnated wood is resistant to blue stain fungi and complies with the requirements of EN 152:1996.
  3. Silvaroyal® impregnated wood is not susceptible to the growth of old house borer larvae and therefore complies with the requirements of EN 46-1:2010.
  4. Wood impregnated with Silvaroyal® is fully protected against the action of drywood termites according to the Becker method.
  5. Silvaroyal® binds well to the wood and does not leach out of the wood. The good binding has been confirmed by the following standard methods: EN 84:2002, ENV 1250-2:2004 and TS CEN/TS 15119-1:2008.
  6. Wood impregnated with Silvaroyal® is much more resistant to the action of marine organisms. No visible damage to the wood has occurred during one year exposure in seawater according to EN 275:2004. During the same period, control, unprotected specimens were completely destructed.
  7. Five-year field testing of wood impregnated with Silvaroyal® in accordance with TS CEN/TS 12037:2005 confirmed its resistance to wood pests. After five years of testing, no signs of action by wood-destroying fungi were detected. During the same period, the control, unprotected specimens were almost completely decomposed.

All the test results and certificates obtained confirm that Silvaroyal® is an excellent wood preservative that protects wood very effectively against all wood pests in all application classes.

Show instructions for use

Preparation of materials, space and working conditions:

  • Select and prepare wood elements of the appropriate tree species that is suitable for the intended use of the finished product (the intended use determines the choice of application method and the recommended rate of application of the wood preservative).
  • Only clean and healthy wood, free of decay or insect damage, must be used.
  • Silvaroyal® is most commonly used to protect structural wood, log cabins, garden furniture, pergolas, children's playground structures, balcony and other railings, wooden facade cladding, as well as all wood installed under the roof, by coating or dipping/drenching.
  • The wood needs to be properly dry (moisture content of the wood between 15 and 20%) before applying Silvaroyal® primary preservative.
  • Silvaroyal® primary preservative may be applied to mechanically processed or unprocessed wood (in the case of structural wood protection, usually only sawn wood is used, and in the case of joinery products, finished or planed-sawn wood is used).

Important:

  • Never dilute Silvaroyal® preservative with water or mix it with other preservatives and substances, as this can significantly reduce its effectiveness.
  • Silvaroyal® wood preservative should be applied at temperatures between +5 ˚C and +35 ˚C.
  • Wash the tool with water and detergent after work is finished.
  • Keep Silvaroyal® primary wood preservative in its original tightly sealed packaging, out of the reach of children.
  • After the application of the preservative, we advise against further wood processing, such as planing, sanding, sawing, drilling, milling, etc., since these operations can (also) cause the removal of the layer of wood protected with Silvaroyal®.
  • Personal protective equipment (protective clothing, gloves, goggles) shall be worn when working with Silvaroyal®.
  1. The wooden elements to be protected shall first be placed on stands or surfaces provided for this purpose.
  2. Protect the subfloor and flooring with an appropriate waterproof material, e.g., PVC sheeting.
  3. Start applying the first coat of Silvaroyal® primary wood preservative with a dense, well-absorbing brush. Make sure that you are precise in your work and that you apply a generous coat of Silvaroyal® on all sides of the selected wood element
  4. After application, wait between 30 and 180 minutes (depending on the time of year and weather conditions) for the Silvaroyal® wood preservative to be properly absorbed into the wood and to dry.
  5. Next, apply a new generous application of the preservative with a brush over all the wood surfaces.
  6. When applying the preservative, it is important to adjust the amount of the preservative to the absorbency and processing of the wood surface (the specified application rate of Silvaroyal® wood preservative is 200-250 g/m2, which is usually achieved with two rich brush applications; in case of poorer absorption, the number of applications should be increased accordingly).
  7. After the Silvaroyal® preservative has been applied and the wood has dried properly (after approx. 48-96 hours, depending on the time of year and weather conditions), the wood can also be stained to the desired colour tone with Silvalazur water-based wood stain.
  8. The coating process usually ensures the wood preservative to penetrate approx. 1 mm into the wood. If the wood cracks after coating and being exposed to weather conditions, the cracks are often deeper than 1 mm, so it is advisable to repeat the coating process after a while to protect the newly formed cracks as well.

Important:

At the end of the application of the wood preservative, the next phase of chemical binding of Silvaroyal® to the wood follows, which usually lasts for at least 48 hours from the last application. The time taken for the wood preservative to bind to the wood does not mean that the wood is adequately dry, so the wood should normally be allowed to dry for at least another 24-96 hours (depending on the application method chosen and the amount of preservative applied) before any further work is carried out on the protected wooden elements (painting, gluing, etc.).

During the Silvaroyal® protection process, the wood turns pastel green. Protected wood exposed to weather conditions and the sun (UV rays) will patinate (turn grey) over time, which is a completely natural process and does not affect the quality of the protection or the life span of the wooden product/object. If you would like to additionally paint or prevent the patination of the protected wood, we recommend the use of our water-based wood stain - Silvalazur, which, in addition to its colouring function, also provides the wood with additional protection against weather conditions.

Application of Silvaroyal® wood preservative by drenching or dipping:

  1. Before starting work, prepare a suitable wooden or metal frame (trough), lined on the inside with PVC foil (be sure to check the reactivity of the foil with the agent beforehand). If necessary, the trough can also be placed on two wooden or metal stands.
  2. Then dip or drench each wooden element in Silvaroyal® in the trough previously prepared for this purpose (the wooden elements shall be fully dipped or drenched for approx. 10-30 seconds).
  3. After the wooden elements have been dipped or drenched, you should place them on the stand prepared for this purpose.
  4. Wait 30 to 180 minutes after the drenching or dipping process, (depending on the time of year and weather conditions) for the Silvaroyal® primary preservative to be absorbed into the wood and to dry properly.
  5. After the first drenching process and after the wood has dried properly, repeat the dipping or drenching process once more.
  6. It is important to adjust the dipping time to the absorption and surface finishing of the wood surface (after the second dipping or drenching the wood must have reached the specified amount of 200-250 g/m2; in the case of poorer absorption, the number of applications shall be adjusted accordingly).
  7. After the application of Silvaroyal® primary preservative has been completed and the wood has dried properly (after approx. 48-96 hours, depending on the time of year and weather conditions), the wood can also be stained to the desired colour tone with Silvalazur water-based wood stain;
  8. During the dipping process, the preservative only ensures protection of the surface and cracks of the wooden element, but does not penetrate deeper into the wood. However, the penetration of the preservative into the wood or the quality of the protection can be significantly improved by extending the dipping time.

* If the wood is dipped in Silvaroyal® for a longer period of time, the drying time of the wooden elements before any further work (painting, gluing, etc.) is extended; e.g., after a 24-hour dipping period in Silvaroyal®, the wooden elements dry for approx. 2 to 3 weeks (depending on the drying conditions).

For any further instructions and advice, we are available weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on (00386) 1 2800571, or you can send us an email to info@silvaprodukt.si.
